Any business can benefit and increase traction with social media. Whether you’re selling a product or providing a service, it’s likely that your clients are active on social media. Why not take this to your advantage and meet your clients right where they are?

The best thing about social media is its low-cost and effectiveness. Here are ways to boost your traction using social media:

Know your client

The first step is to know who your clients are and which social media platforms they frequent. It’s futile to invest your time on social media networks where your clients are not present. For example, if you are targeting teenagers you would leave LinkedIn out of your social media campaigns because LinkedIn is a professional network where teenagers do not frequent. You will focus more on networks like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

In addition, you need to know your client in order to post content relevant to them. You get to know your clients by observing some of their behaviors on social media. Take a sample of your current clients, observe them closely on social media and use your observations to create content uniquely for them.


It could be that you have a great brand, but not many people know about it. Increase your visibility with social media advertising.

Facebook AD targeting allows you to reach more people who are likely to have an interest in your business. You can segment your ad per location, age, gender, interests and more. There is also a popular “Boost” feature, which allows your post to appear higher on news feeds, making it more visible to your target market.

With Twitter, you can create “Twitter Cards”, which is a small ad displayed on user feeds. The ad content is completely up to you. LinkedIn also has an affordable AD program you can invest in. Having used this option before, I noticed that it’s important to clearly identify who you want to target on this platform as sometimes when you use broad terms you get a lot of miss-matched clients.

Instagram Business Advertising is another one that can increase your visibility. With a community of over 500 million, it’s certainly one platform that gets your brand to a wider audience. Seeing that it’s a predominantly image-focused platform, advertising requires pictures of excellent quality.

Use hashtags

Hashtags rule our lives on social media. We use hashtags to track our favorite topics, track what’s trending on social media and communicate with others interested in the same topics.

Learn which hashtags are popular or trending, then use them in your campaigns.

Engage, ask questions

The best posts get people talking and discussing. Aim to ask a question in every post. Add a fun fact to the post to keep readers interested in reading more.

Also, don’t just write a post and forget about it. Engage with your readers.

An image can make or break a campaign because this is the first thing readers see, along with the title.

Also, make sure the resolution of the image is in accordance with the social media network. I once posted the same image across all platforms and later realized that some platforms cut the picture in half.

Giveaways and competitions raise interest in your brand, but you don’t want to attract the wrong people. Make the competition or giveaway relevant to your brand. Think about your target market and offer something they would find valuable.
