The reason humour works is because people like to feel they’re not being pitched to—just entertained. The fact that people will open themselves up more to a humorous AD rather than a serious AD, makes them more likely to be influenced when they’re entertained.

There are many examples of Ads that meant to be humorous, but that a group of people have taken offense to or an audience have not found funny.
